The Buyer’s Guide

‎Diamonds have existed in the world since the dawn of history. The first mention of diamonds dates back to biblical times, where they appeared as one of the gemstones set in the breastplate. Between the 9th and 14th centuries BCE, merchants worldwide traded diamonds, and there are various testimonies and references to diamond-set rings given as symbols of engagement.

‎Buying a diamond ring for an engagement, a gift for a loved one, or any other occasion is very exciting! At Mior, we understand the excitement and the feelings that accompany it, such as confusion and difficulty in making a decision due to a lack of knowledge. To make it easier and help you at this important moment, we have prepared a short explanation of our knowledge in the field of diamonds and basic information you should know when deciding to buy a diamond.

‎Kiki has been producing and selling diamonds and jewelry for some of the largest companies in Israel and around the world for over 30 years. We purchase raw and polished diamonds directly from diamond exchanges worldwide without any intermediary gaps to get the best value for you. From extensive experience in the field, we see diamonds as an asset for all intents and purposes, so it is important to us that you understand what you are investing in and know how to make the right choice when choosing your property.

‎First, you should know that the price of diamonds is determined by supply and demand (as with any product). In addition, there is a global price list (Rappaport), which determines the price of the diamond according to precise parameters such as: cleanliness, color, quality of work, size, etc.‎

‎The steps to buy a diamond:‎‎ budget, type of diamond, shape of the diamond, size of the diamond, color of the diamond, cleanliness of the diamond and quality (quality of work).‎

Step 1: What is the budget?

As mentioned, due to the many parameters according to which a diamond is priced, the cost of a diamond in general and a diamond for engagement, in particular, can range from 1000 NIS to tens of thousands of NIS. Therefore, as a first step, it is important to set a budget in advance.

Step 2: What type of diamond do you prefer? Natural or laboratory?

Natural Diamond: A diamond is a rare natural resource, formed in a slow process (about millions of years) at high temperatures and pressures. This is the reason for its great value. About 70 percent of the world’s buyers will prefer only a natural diamond.

Lab-grown Diamond: Artificial diamonds, sometimes referred to as “lab-grown diamonds,” are created in an unnatural process using man-made technological means. It is a chemical process that can mimic the temperature and pressure conditions similar to those that prevail in the depths of the earth. In recent years, there has been a demand for lab-grown diamonds due to their lower price (tens of percent less), and today about 30% of buyers will choose lab-grown diamonds.

Step 3: Which Diamond Shape Will You Choose?

Every customer has their preferred diamond shape. The round diamond is the most popular in the world. Here are the shapes to choose from:

Step 4: What is the size (weight) of the diamond?

The presence of diamonds is rare; the larger the diamonds, the higher their rarity, as well as the prices. The weight of a diamond is measured in a unit of weight called a carat. A carat is equal to 200 milligrams. But this is only a numerical figure, and when buying a diamond, we are talking about carats according to a number of points. One carat is divided into 100 points. For example, 50 points is equal to 1/2 carat, and it is written like this: 0.50 carats, etc.

‎Step 5: The color of the diamond‎

‎Diamonds come from the underbelly of the earth in different shades of color. They range from colorless (transparent) diamonds, which are the most expensive, to yellowish tones. The color of the diamond is the result of natural formation, so it will be its color and will never change. Most of us are familiar with the white diamond because it is the most popular in the world. Diamonds are graded according to their color: Diamonds with a higher color rating will appear whiter and brighter.‎

‎Choice of colors: H-D ensures diamonds with good and beautiful appearance.‎

‎The scale for evaluating the color of a diamond is as follows‎

Step 6: Clarity of the Diamond

Most natural diamonds have defects due to the enormous pressure and natural conditions under which they form. There are two main types of diamond defects: external and internal. External imperfections on the surface of the diamond can sometimes be removed by polishing, but internal imperfections (such as air bubbles, cracks, and minerals that penetrate the diamond) cannot be corrected. These defects usually cannot be seen with the naked eye and require a magnifying glass (loupe) to be detected.

Step 7: Quality of Work

This criterion examines the diamond cut. Among the features for evaluating a diamond, the cut is probably the most important for determining its value. “Diamond cutting” refers to how the diamond reflects light that passes through it to the eyes of the beholder. A diamond with a non-professional and imprecise cut will not reflect light back effectively. The light will “leak out” from the sides or bottom of the diamond, resulting in a dimmer shine. Professional and precise cutting gives a diamond its unique brilliance, which comes directly from the heart of the diamond. The angles of cutting and polishing allow the diamond to refract light ideally, giving it its almost supernatural beauty. Therefore, the cut of the diamond has a decisive impact on its value.

This is the scale of the diamond’s cut quality:

After reading this guide, we hope you have gained more knowledge. However, it is still important to purchase diamonds from a professional and experienced source who can help you choose the best diamond (asset) for you. Additionally, it is important to request a gemological certificate that states the parameters and valuation of the diamond.
